Your Strength - My Weakness

Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding. 2 Corinthians 10:12 (ESV)

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.  Romans 12:3 (ESV)

Have you ever compared your strength to others? To some degree, we all have gone down the comparison road of us versus someone else. We compare our looks, our money, our social status, our spouses, our kids, our jobs, etc. Besides what was mentioned, do we also compare our strengths to others’ weaknesses? And if we do, why do we do it? Does it make us feel good to know that we are strong in various areas of life and others may be weak? Does it make us feel we are in a better position than they are?

These are questions and thoughts that all of us need to evaluate in ourselves. It’s human nature to an extent to compare ourselves against others. And it is not bad to have the occasional thoughts of comparison, the problem comes in when it goes deeper into our psyche where we compare ourselves against others and have negative thoughts that surface due to this comparison. God made each and every one of us unique and gifted with natural talents and abilities. For example, one person may be able to sing as a soloist and have a beautiful, powerful voice. But this individual should not look down upon or feel their gifting is superior to others who do not have the ability. Just as this individual has a strong, beautiful voice they may be weak in other areas of life, for example, their finances. And in this scenario, the person who may be great with finances, may not be so good with singing.

The various levels of abilities and talents given to us by God, should not be used as a vice to compare with one another. Instead, these gifts and talents should be used to build each other up and to share in ministry to the world. God does not want us to shame or belittle someone due to areas where they are weak and to puff ourselves up due to our areas of strength. This type of thinking and behavior is the opposite of God’s ideal for His children.

Let us remember that as we move throughout life, there will be those who are strong in some areas, weaker in others, and vice versa. And that is the way it is with every human being. May we celebrate each other’s strengths, and if possible, help and encourage each other where we are weak. May we use our given gifts and talents positively, to uplift God’s children, and to care for His world.

Blessings,

Angélique 💐
