Life's Storms

As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”  But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Mark 4:35 & 37-39 (NLT)

There will be times in our lives when we will encounter the storms of life. Life will not always be calm and peaceful, as we all will have storms that we have to go through. The question is, how will you react?

In the story from the Bible verses above, Jesus and the disciples were looking to cross the lake to the other side. Probably when they started, it was calm and very nice weather, and Jesus fell asleep. However, as they sailed, the storm swelled, and the boat began to be difficult for them to maneuver. A point to realize from this story is that at least four out of the twelve disciples were expert fishermen who had seen storms in the past and knew how to handle a boat. However, this storm was obviously worse than what they had ever experienced. After many attempts to get the boat out of the storm and to the other side, the disciples cried out to Jesus in fear as they felt they were going to die. And what did Jesus do? As you read further into the story, Jesus woke up, rebuked the winds and the rain, and everything calmed down.

In reading this story, I believe almost all of us are just like the disciples at various times in our lives when we encounter storms. Just like the disciples, we are scared and fear the worst outcome for ourselves and others. Due to our human frailty, it is understandable that we react in the same manner as they did. It is in the midst of hopelessness that we might try to save ourselves, just like the disciples. Also, like the disciples, when we feel fear, pain, or loss, we start to question or doubt God’s love and care for us. We feel He should act in a certain way based on what we think and believe from our human perspective. However, we need to realize (like the disciples) that it is in life’s storms that God can work His greatest miracles.

God desires a close relationship with us and for us to trust in Him completely for the storms that we will go through. As we move forward in life, may we remember that God is with us and He is faithful; even when we feel His apparent lack of involvement, does not make sense to us. We must trust and believe He is always there with us and can calm the storms when we cannot.

Blessings,

Angélique
