Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:1 (ESV)
Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1-2 (ESV)
Who do you imitate in this world? All of us usually will imitate and emulate someone we have met or admired from afar. The definition of imitate: to copy someone’s actions, appearance, or manner. To emulate means to strive to equal or excel in imitating someone who is admired. So, the question is this, whom have you strived to imitate? Is it someone in the entertainment industry whether it be television, movies, music, fashion, or sports? How about a politician, a lawyer, or a doctor? It is natural for humans to follow other humans and depending on who they choose to follow, it can have an impact on their behavior, attitude, and life values.
The pull of this world is great, and many are sometimes drawn to imitating other people. The societal norms of pop culture and the lure of pleasure to enjoy life no matter what can draw many to follow others and the life they believe these people are living from what they see on social media. One may assume a person is good based on what they listen to and see in the media, not really knowing the truth. Unfortunately, there are plenty of hate-filled, evil individuals on Earth, and due to their position, wealth, and/or power, many people imitate and/or emulate these individuals.
However, if one chooses to imitate another, look to choose a person who is honest, good, and has moral integrity. And honestly, instead of looking to imitate fallen, imperfect human beings, one should look to the life of Jesus Christ, and how He lived here on Earth. His life is a testament on how to interact with others and live a wholesome life that pleases God. Jesus’s life showed compassion and kindness and looked to uphold God’s principles and the love of His creation.
They say imitation is a form of flattery. However, people should not strive to flatter each other. Instead, one should look to live a life that is honest, pure, and pleases God. Strive to live life so that He would be proud of the choices made each and every day.
So, remember, let us strive to imitate Jesus Christ and the life He lived today and always.
Blessings,
Angélique
