God's Encouragement

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 (ESV)

Have you ever felt down, not necessarily depressed, but just down and feeling that things in life are not where you would like them to be? I recently had that feeling come over me. Giving all praises to God, I can safely say those feelings come infrequently and they usually last just a few hours. But when the feelings do come, I know that’s when I need to take extra care of myself by getting rest, eating a balanced diet, exercising, and most importantly turning to God's word. In addition to studying the Bible, I seek to listen to Christian music as well as watch good bible-based preaching videos. Then, after a short amount of time, I started feeling better, more focused, and more centered, and my trust and belief in God strengthened despite the current negativity that surrounds us daily.

One popular set of verses in the Bible that gives me (and many others) encouragement is Psalm 23. Even though David, the author of this psalm defeated Goliath and had many other victories, he had his down days in life as well. Yet, he trusted God and allowed his relationship with God to become real to him as he went through troubled times. Having head knowledge of Psalm 23 is important but what is of greater importance is to truly experience God, His presence, and His guidance; this is the ultimate goal.

As you read Psalm 23 below, notice that I have emphasized the words my, me, I, you, and your. When I did this, it really brought this psalm to life and reinforced the notion that these are not just mere words on a page. Enjoy anew God’s words of encouragement…

Psalm 23 (from the New Living Translation)

The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renewed my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

Blessings,
